Oil Tank Fire Last Night in High Island TX

Lightning hit an oil tank battery tonight July 23, 2009 as a thunderstorm blew thru the area.

Smoke over neighbor's house just after the fire started.
Taken near the High Island bridge about 1.5 miles North of the fire
From the beach about a half mile away facing North

Apparently lightning struck an oil tank "battery" on the West edge of High Island Thursday night at about 5:45 PM. The smoke was rising over our house which is less than 3000' from the tanks. Our fear was that the wind would die down and the smoke would settle into town forcing us to leave the area...this never happened.

From what I am told fire departments from the area responded and from the after math you can see that large amounts of firefighting foam were used to suppress the flames. The small contained area may have made fighting the fire difficult as there is not much room between the tanks and the spot where the "hill" drops off into the marsh area.

Thanks to all who helped contain this fire for a Job Well Done!
